Assemblyman Mathis votes on MCO Reauthorization Bill

Sacramento – Assemblyman Mathis issued the following statement upon the passage of the bill to increase Managed-Care Operations, or MCO, revenues to be spent on healthcare:

“It’s just unfortunate that we keep hearing about how our state has the 4th largest economy in the world yet we are living in 3rd world conditions. While the Governor is putting our hospitals on life support, he is increasing his slush fund for his failed projects rather than prioritizing the needs of our state. We should be focusing on fully reimbursing our hospitals for Medi-Cal but due to government-malpractice, significant portions of the revenues raised from the just-approved MCO tax reform will be directed into the general fund to subsidize the fiscal recklessness that this Governor & Legislative Leaders have engaged in. Despite all the issues that are not addressed in this MCO bill, I must support this bill to ensure that local hospitals get a lifeline so we can hopefully prevent them from shutting down. Once this bill passes, I do hope that this body doesn’t just think the problem is solved. We have much more work to do to solve the structural issues plaguing our hospitals. I look forward to working with all sides to do this.”
