SACRAMENTO – Today, Assembly Budget Committee Vice Chair Jay Obernolte (R-Hesperia) issued the following statement in response to the passage of two emergency budget bills to mitigate the effects of COVID-19:
“Today we passed two critically important funding bills in response to the spread of the Coronavirus. AB/SB 117 will provide critical funding to our public school system to ensure it is held harmless as many school districts throughout the state have had to shut down. It will also give schools the money they need to deep clean their facilities. AB/SB 89 provides an immediate $500 million and up to $1 billion in funding to give the Governor the authority to address this pandemic. This money will be used to assist our hospitals, nursing homes, and other health care facilities and will also be used to clean child care centers so they can remain open.
“By taking the actions we did today, we are placing an extraordinary degree of trust in Governor Newsom. However, these are extraordinary times and it makes sense to empower him to act quickly and expedite the funding necessary to mitigate this crisis. The funding provided in this bill is critical to stopping the spread of this illness, to preserving our economy, and most importantly, to saving the lives of Californians.”
