Sacramento – This week, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 2567 (Mathis – 2024), which requires California’s higher education institutions to include data pertaining to housing for students who are veterans in reports published on their websites and submitted to the legislature.
“Today, the Governor’s signature has shown Veterans that the State will not leave them behind when it comes to ensuring that they have a fair chance at gaining a higher education. From the outset, Veterans face far greater challenges than the average student when it comes to pursuing a collegiate degree. The transition from service member to civilian is daunting, and throwing education into the mix can prove to be an overwhelming task for our veterans. AB 2567 will ensure that our Veterans are not disproportionately harmed by the housing crisis that affects the students of our State. Housing insecurity should be the last concern on the minds of those who have chosen to serve our great State and Country. As a Veteran myself who chose to pursue higher education following my service, I am proud to have been able to tackle this issue in my final year with the Legislature. Data produced by this measure will serve to support our Veterans for years to come.”
